Toronto’s getting a new art trail and it’s the first of its kind in Canada

Toronto’s waterfront is on track to get a major cultural landmark and some art to make it pop. The Lassonde Art Trail will be the newest addition to the city’s Ookwemin Minising island, and it was just announced that it’ll get more permanent artwork for the major outdoor art site.

First of its kind

Set to launch in 2026, the Lassonde Art Trail will weave more than 4.2 km of public walking paths through a new waterfront park system on the new man-made island overlooking Lake Ontario in Toronto’s Port Lands.

It’s described as the first of its kind in Canada and will be a dynamic public art experience, which will showcase a rotating set of artworks by Canadian and international artists.

Among the first announced is Portuguese visual artist Joana Vasconcelos. Her work will be one of two signature permanent artworks commissioned to anchor the trail.

“Inspired by the protective and integrating role of the Greek goddess, Artemisa will be, at its core, a ‘magic seed’ sprouting from the soil of the restored wetland, a symbol of rebirth and flourishing of the natural world and the surrounding communities that illustrates how cultural and environmental regeneration are inextricably linked,” said Joana Vasconcelos.

Though there’s no official date set for its opening, we’re already excited to embark on this new experience.
