A new block party celebrating Filipino culture & heritage is coming to Vancouver

Believe it or not, the season of block parties and outdoor events is just around the corner, and the first-ever Lapu-Lapu Day Block Party is set to kick them off. As one of the most diverse neighbourhoods in Vancouver, Sunset is the perfect place to embrace the spirit of unity – and Filipino BC is putting on the neighbourhood’s first multi-block party this spring.

The celebration commemorates the first national hero of the Philippines, Lapu-Lapu, who stood against oppression and fought for the freedom of Indigenous Filipinos.

The multi-block event promises to bring the community together for a full day of festivities, culture, and pride, driven by the “By Filipinos, for everyone’ mentality.

So if you’ve always wanted to learn about Filipino culture and heritage, now’s your chance to engage with the community in a meaningful, exciting way.

About Lapu-Lapu Day

Lapu-Lapu Day commemorates Datu Lapu-Lapu, a fearless Indigenous Visayan Chieftain from Mactan, Philippines, who represents the unwavering resistance of the Philippines as the country faced multiple waves of colonization by the Spanish and Portuguese.

Today, Lapu-Lapu remains a symbol of inspiration for all Filipinos.

At the event, guests can expect to check out a mix of food and craft vendors, live music, and cultural performances. The block party will also include Vancouver’s biggest basketball showdown, filled with interactive on-court activities.

Those interested can form their own teams and sign up to participate in the action. The winning team not only takes home a trophy, but earns the chance to represent Vancouver at this summer’s National Filipino Heritage Hoop Fest in Toronto.

Interested in checking it out? You can view the block party’s official map and plan your journey.

The first-ever Lapu-Lapu Day Block Party will take place from 11 am to 7 pm on Saturday, April 27th between East 41st and East 47th Avenue.

So there you have it, Vancouver! Get ready to kick off an exciting block party season!
