Situated in Balfour, British Columbia, Kokanee Glacier Park is filled with natural wonders to explore this season, including some of the most scenic mountain country of southern BC.
Encompassing a whopping 32,035 hectares, the year-round, highly-elevated park is home to two glaciers – Kokanee and Woodbury – both of which reach above 1,800 metres high. Together, their waters feed over 30 lakes, and are the headwaters of many surrounding creeks, according to BC Parks.
Kokanee Lake in particular is a must-see, surrounded by rugged, rocky cliffs. Those who are up for a bit of cross-country skiing or snowshoeing can make their way to the beautiful Sapphire, Joker, Gibson, Kaslo, and Tanal Lakes, which offer excellent fishing opportunities as well.
In terms of winter recreation, ski mountaineering and snowmobiling is permitted, but visitors are responsible for evaluating avalanche hazards, route finding, self-rescue, and first-aid.
All in all, there are 85 kilometres of well-marked trails to explore year-round. So if you’re keen on a backcountry adventure this winter, that’s exactly what you’ll find at this provincial park!
According to Nelson Kootenay Lake Tourism, there are a handful of winter cabins maintained by the Alpine Club of Canada visitors can check out. However, for the winter season, they’re available through a lottery system only.
Ready to take in the breathtaking mountain vistas with your own eyes? It’s a bit of a trek from Vancouver, but the other-worldly views are so worth it!
Note that from Jan 15 to May 15, the 500 hectares surrounding Tanal Lake and Woodbury will be closed.
Other than that, you’re free to roam this massive, elevated paradise any time of year.
