In just two short weeks, Canada will officially mark the coronation of its new monarch, His Majesty King Charles III, who acceded to the throne following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II last September.
A new release dated Monday, April 24th reveals more details about celebrations taking place in Canada, including a 21-gun salute fired from Parliament Hill, live music & art performances, and more.
“For over 50 years, His Majesty King Charles III has had strong ties with our country and the people who live here. Today, the Government is pleased to share the details of the Canadian commemorations in honour of the King’s Coronation,” says Minister of Canadian Heritage Pablo Rodriguez.
The throne was passed to the former Prince of Wales upon his mother’s death on September 8, 2022. One week later, he was officially proclaimed King.
Flash forward to May 6, 2023, the date selected for Canada’s recognition of its new monarch and Head of State.
According to the federal release, the ceremony will take place in Ottawa to acknowledge the relationship His Majesty has had with Canada for over 50 years.

The event on May 6th will include speeches, artistic performances, and a special unveiling of a new stamp by Canada Post.
“Canada Post is proud to mark the Coronation of the new Monarch by unveiling the first Canadian stamp depicting the image of His Majesty King Charles III. This continues a long-standing tradition of issuing definitive stamps depicting the Canadian sovereign, dating back more than 170 years” says Senior Vice-President of Corporate and Employee Communications Jo-Anne Polak.
In attendance? Dignitaries from the Table of Precedence of Canada, including members of the King’s Privy Council for Canada.

On May 6th and 7th, Canadians can take part in additional activities organized at Rideau Hall and across the country. At the former, you can visit the Residence of the Governor General and learn more about the Canadian Crown.
Throughout the weekend, the Peace Tower and other federal buildings in Canada’s Capital Region will be illuminated in emerald green to mark the occasion.
The coronation will take place in the U.K. on the same day, at Westminster Abbey, in London.
