Beach season is short and sweet here in our province, so it’s no surprise that our sandy shorelines are packed in the summer months. If you’re looking for a lesser-known spot to soak up the sun without the crowds, head on over to Ipperwash Beach.
Located on Ontario’s “blue coast,” Ipperwash Beach doesn’t get nearly as popular as the nearby hot spot of Grand Bend.
Before we go any further, you’re probably wondering what the blue coast is all about! Well, according to Ontario’s Southwest, this region got its name for having two internationally-renowned Blue Flag beaches along its coast.
“Positioned where the mouth of Lake Huron rushes in to meet the St. Clair River, it’s no wonder this place has been referred to as Blue Water Land for decades,” says Ontario’s Southwest.
Ipperwash Beach is situated right at the heart of this region and is actually one of the longest freshwater beaches in all of Ontario. It even has three separate entrances.

Located south of Grand Bend, this beach has soft sand, shallow water, and plenty of room to stretch out and enjoy some peace and quiet.
This beach does get its fair share of visitors during peak times. This area is also a popular spot for bird watching and hiking among the sand dunes and Carolinian forests.
That’s because this area was once a giant nature area known as Ipperwash Provincial Park, and there are still many trails that extend in and around the former park areas.
So, the next time you’re craving a beach day, we promise that you’ll be staying until sunset at this peaceful lesser-known spot.
