This free light festival is taking over Toronto hotspots for a whole month

There’s a month-long interactive light festival with large interactive displays in downtown Toronto this March. Here’s what to know about Illuminite.

Now until March 31st, feast your eyes on free and eye-catching light displays around the Downtown Yonge neighbourhood.

There are six installations to enjoy that range from large interactive works to small window creations.

“Downtown Yonge is so much more than just high-rise buildings and offices – it is also a cultural corridor; not just to be experienced in the summer, but in the winter as well. Don’t let construction and dreary winter weather hinder you from taking a stroll, we feel these installations will be that added push to bring people to the area,” said Cheryll Diego, Downtown Yonge’s Public Realm Experience Director.

“With Illuminite, we invite friends and families, visitors and tourists to come by and stay for a while, and truly feel the heartbeat of Toronto.”

What to expect

Head to Trinity Square Park and that’s where you’ll find “Spectrum” by Mirari – an audio experience where you can “engage with others in a sound-and-light dialogue.”

Another gem at the park is “SAM Lamp” by Sam Hardwicke. This piece is described as a “noctilucent installation that aims to provide temporary comfort to those in need through the use of semiotics of structure and seasonal affective disorder (SAD) light technology.”

Check out “Ethera” by Ariel Weiss, also at Trinity Square Park for an interactive and LED-based public art installation. It was designed by students from the Department of Architectural Science at Toronto Metropolitan University and Toronto-based lighting design studio Urban Visuals and StrongLED.

Stop by HNR Properties at 19-21 Dundas Square to see “Digital Drapes” by MattCreative. This installation features the buildings’ front windows covered in grids of programmable LEDs.

On Yonge Street is where you’ll find “You Were Here” by Meghan Cheng – “an interactive light installation that uses motion tracking of people walking by to animate the lighted butterflies.”

Yonge-Dundas Square is hosting “Biolumen” by Radha Chaddah x RAW Design, an immersive experience with changing light, texture, and sound, according to organizers.
