Folks with a sweet tooth are in for a pretty sweet surprise this week. Next door to Strathcona Beer Company is a new ice cream shop specializing in chocolate treats and nostalgic ice cream floats – and they’ve just opened their doors to the public! What began as a chocolate-exclusive business in December 2021 has exploded into a full-blown retro-style sweet shop where folks can indulge in ’90s-inspired treats.

The chocolate

Hype Chocolate has already garnered a reputation for pushing the boundaries when it comes to chocolate-covered eats. From tiny chocolate-shaped boots to unique chocolate bar flavours, they’ve got it all.

The ice cream

Now, for the shakes & swirls. Visitors can expect to see a ton of delicious floats, milkshakes, and ice cream sandwiches on the menu. Go for a bowl of soft-serve topped with Lucky Charms, or a chocolate peanut butter ice cream oreo sandwich (dipped in Reese’s!)

In terms of sugary nostalgic cereals to choose from, there are Fruity Pebbles, Trix, mini Cinnamon Toast Crunch pieces, Reese’s Puffs, and much more.

Finally, it’s time for shakes. For a sweet summertime treat, try the Cereal S’mores Milkshake, or one of their many ice cream floats. They’re all made with delicious, obscure sodas that would totally rock your 12-year-old-self’s world. If that sounds more your speed, check out the Faygo Cotton Candy Float or the Firework Float – which draws upon the red, white, and blue popsicles of our youth.

Hype Chocolate is now open from Wednesday to Saturday from 1 to 7 pm, and 1 to 6 pm on Sundays.

That’s all for now, folks! We’ll see you at Hype for some tasty treats this week.
