You’re about to see some crazy ass costumes around town a little over a month before Halloween, please don’t be surprised, let us tell you why.
The city is ready to play host to one of the most entertaining sports events ever, the HSBC Canada Sevens, on September 25 and 26. So, you’ll likely see huge crowds donning their party hats (literally and figuratively) and flocking into the Commonwealth Stadium for this 2-day long excitement-packed event.
This is the first and probably only time Edmonton hosts the Sevens as the event usually journeys to other continents after its stop in Vancouver. In light of the COVID circumstances this year, the teams will be seen contesting in Edmonton.
Yes, we know you have a million or so questions about it. And yes, we’ve got all the deets which we, obviously, will be sharing with you. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming thrill fest!
The Rugby Sevens games are slightly different from the usual matches in the sense that these are actually mini-games. Each of these fast-paced games is 16 minutes long (including a 2-min break) and is played with just 7 members per team. Multiple games are played throughout the 8-hour day. While Day 1 is round-robin play within the 3 team pools, Day 2 is when teams play for gold, silver, and bronze.
Sevens 2021 has 12 participating countries that are divided into three pools. South Africa, Canada, Hong Kong, and Mexico make up Pool A. Pool B comprises Kenya, USA, Spain and Chile. And Pool C consists of Great Britain, Ireland, Germany, and Jamaica.
In addition to the men’s rugby matches, the tournament will also see women’s matches under the Fast Four edition. The competing teams include Canada of course, USA, Great Britain and Mexico.
The Sporting Spirit
While the games continue to be rugged and rough, the players share a strong respect for the game and each other. The whole purpose of the tournament is to make people see the sport for what it is, a healthy and entertaining competition.
The tournament has come to be known for the unreal, dare we say hilarious costumes that people don to cheer for their native teams and the Edmonton edition of the tournament will be no different. So, feel free to bring your wackiest foot forward to join the upbeat party vibe. To spice things up, there’s a major prize for one lucky attendee. The winner will take home a round-trip to San Diego for 2!
It’s not all play at Sevens; there’s a lot of precaution and safety as well. The event will see through all the provincial safety measures including lower bowl half capacity for social distancing, admitting people only if they’re double vaxxed (in case of 12+) and wearing masks. We suggest reading up on all safety measures here before heading to the stadium.
That’s everything guys. Now, head onto the website to grab your tickets because you will, and we repeat, YOU WILL regret missing out on this partizzle.
