Here’s a map of the roads affected by Calgary’s new 40 km/h speed limit

Earlier this month, after what felt like a lifelong debate, the city finally voted to reduce the speed limit in some residential areas from 50 km to 40 km/hr in the hopes of creating a safer city with fewer collisions and lower societal costs.

With a price tag of $2.3 million, this decision definitely won’t come free, but if it leads to even one less life lost or changed for the worse, we’d say that’s well worth it!

Now, when this takes effect on May 31st, it’ll be pretty safe just to assume that most residential limits will be 40 km/h and that there will be a sign stating otherwise if they’re not; but change can be tough for some people!

With this in mind, the city has actually developed an interactive map outlining all changes by ward, just to get ahead of any confusion.

Reductions were looked at on a case-by-case basis, with officials looking at everything from road length and design to the average speed of traffic. They also considered whether or not there was a bus route on the road and what, if any, traffic calming measures were in place.
