You will soon be able to apply to have a pet chicken in Calgary

The city is where it’s at, but occasionally you might catch yourself thinking about how fulfilling farm life would be. Believe us when we say you’re not alone. In fact, our fascination with agriculture and pet ownership has become so prevalent that officials have announced the launch of the Calgary urban hen licensing program – to begin on March 21st.

Meant to delight those who dream of fresh eggs, more responsibility and companionship, this program will give Calgarians the opportunity to adopt and raise up to 4 hens as their pets.

“We heard from Calgarians that modern pet ownership means more than just caring for cats and dogs,” said Jennifer Lawlor, Strategic Services Leader, Calgary Community Standards in a press release.

Of course, becuase it’s not as common as owning a four legged friend, you will have to prove that you know what your doing first!

For the first year only 100 people will be chosen to receive a license and must meet the following criteria:

  •  Be 18+ years old or have a parent or guardian apply on their behalf.
  • Complete approved hen keeping and care training
  • Own the property hens will be kept on, or have written expressed content from the property owner
  • Acquire a free Premise Identification (PID) Number from the Government of Alberta
  • Confirm the number of hen licences requested (the RPO Bylaw requires ownership of between 2 to 4, as hens are group animals)

If however, applicants exceed 100 people, a lottery system will be used to choose participants; so keep keep in mind that it’s not be a sure thing even if you submit any and all paperwork.

Interested? The urban livestock license lottery will open between Monday, March 21 at 11:00 am and Monday, April 18, 2022 at 11:59 pm – so check it out!

For more information on the Calgary urban hen program and licensing criteria is available now on the city’s official website and good luck!
