This historic Ontario village has a mix of small-town charm & outdoor adventure

Small but mighty! Hastings, situated on the Trent-Severn Waterway and the Trans Canada Trail, makes up for its lack of size with plenty of outdoor adventure and an interesting history that dates back to the 1600s.

There’s a historic town in Ontario with Shakespeare-themed gardens

According to Hasting’s website, “In 1615, Samuel de Champlain sailed out of La Rochelle in the province of Saintonge, in France. His mission was to discover and record a water passageway between Georgian Bay and Lake Ontario.”

“His notes reflected an abundance of wildlife birds/animals and waters teaming with fish, as they portaged through Rice Lake to the rapids, which is now known as the source of Trent River and the Village of Hastings.”

The Tent Severn Waterway passes right through Hastings, with waterfront paths making it easy to admire the picturesque views.

The longest network of multi-use recreational trails in the world, The Trans Canada Trail, also passes through Hastings!

The village is also known for having excellent fishing, so excellent that Hastings has something to represent it.

Pisces Park features Pisces Pete, “a giant fish sculpture that marks the significance of fishing in Hastings.”

Pisces Pete is a Walleye fish, measuring 12 feet long, standing at 12 feet tall, crafted in stainless steel.

The designer, Canadian artist Bill Lishman, chose the species as “it represents the most popular for local fishermen and is considered by many to be the best game fish in Ontario.”

A beach day is totally possible while visiting, too. Hastings has a sandy beach on the south side of the Trent River where it flows from Rice Lake so don’t forget to pack a swimsuit!

Hastings, you’re a gem.
