It’s Groundhog Day, and our beloved Canadian prognosticators have emerged from their slumber with only one job to do: determine whether there’ll be an early spring or six more weeks of winter.
Every Feb. 2, the annual tradition has us on our toes, fingers crossed, quietly hoping our groundhogs don’t see their shadow. But if they do, that means we’re in for more winter action, which, for us here in southern Ontario, is a fearful thought.
So how did our furry friends do? Here’s what Canada’s famous groundhogs predicted.
Ontario’s beloved groundhog, Wiarton Willie, has made his prediction! He has not seen his shadow, so it’ll be an early spring.
Doubling down on that prediction, Quebec’s Fred la Marmotte has also called for an early spring.
Unfortunately, Nova Scotia’s Shubenacadie Sam did not do her typical prediction due to the weather.
That being said, since she will not see its shadow today, tradition calls for it to be an early spring.
Cape Breton’s prognosticator, located in Two Rivers Wildlife Park, has made predictions for over 20 years.
This year, Two Rivers Tunnel predicts an early spring.
Though not a groundhog but rather a crustacean, Lucy the Lobster also makes predictions on Feb. 2. It kicks off the Lobster Crawl festival in Barrington, Nova Scotia.
Lucy also predicts an early spring!
Now, Miss Violet had a different prediction. The Vancouver Island marmot saw her shadow so that means six more weeks of winter.
The famous Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania, U.S.A, also predicted six more weeks of winter. But I think we would rather listen to our Canadian friends on the eastern side. After all, we did just deal with a historical storm.
So here’s to an early spring – we know we need it.
