Ontario has a neighbourhood full of colourful fairytale beach cottages

Could your life use a little pop of colour? Well, you’ll experience every colour of the rainbow when you visit the enchanting Grimsby Beach “painted ladies.”

These whimsical homes are described by the Town of Grimsby as real-life “gingerbread cottages.”

This historic neighbourhood is located on the shores of Lake Ontario in Grimsby near Hamilton, only an hour’s drive from Toronto.

You can wander through the area and explore the adorable cottages that are proudly on display.

The dense tree canopy will provide a beautiful backdrop as you stroll, especially in the autumn.

Many of these historic homes predate 1945, and several have been protected as significant cultural heritage resources under the Ontario Heritage Act.

“The residents of Grimsby Beach take a lot of pride in the maintenance of their unique homes and we are grateful for the work that they do to preserve these special homes,” says the town’s website.

You’ll have the time of your life as you explore the unique labyrinth of the neighbourhood, formed by narrow cul-de-sacs and dead-end streets.

However, you’ll want to familiarize yourself with the area before you visit, so as to not get lost.

While visitors are welcome to snap photos, it’s important to remember that these homes are lived in by residents.

So, please be respectful and don’t trespass onto anyone’s property — instead, admire the cottages from the sidewalk!

Afterwards, you can explore the beach and green space in the area, or head into the town of Grimsby to support some local businesses.

Enjoy this trip into a life-sized storybook right here in your province!
