Here’s how to join a full moon hike in Washington this summer

If you have been hiking this summer, and are looking for a different type of adventure, how about one in the evening? There is a “Free Full-Moon Hike” on Hurricane Ridge this summer, running on select dates until September. Here’s what to know about this night time hike.

The full moon hike is about “a mile into the sky” and takes place in Port Angeles, Washington.

“As the sun sets and the moon rises, hike at your own pace along this 1.6-mile (one way) paved trail, climbing 700 ft to the top of Hurricane Hill in the Olympic National Park. Save the date for these amazing astronomer-led hikes,” they state.

“An astronomer will interpret the night sky. Bring sturdy and dress warmly—evenings in the mountains can be cool, even in summer.”

If you are interested to join, there are two dates remaining in the 2024 Full Moon Hikes to Hurricane Hill, and that is on Monday, August 19th with the hike kicking off at 8:30 am, and Tuesday, September 17th, and that hike starts at 7:30 pm.

The 3 mile round trip hike starts at the meeting point, at the Hurricane Hill trailhead. The trailhead is a 1.5 mile drive beyond the Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center.

No reservations are needed, and be sure to wear sturdy shoes. As well, a constellation tour will occur at the top of Hurricane Hill!

While the program is free, but you must pay a fee to enter Olympic National Park.

If you’re interested in other evening hikes, you can also check out the 2024 Dark Sky Telescope Programs at Hurricane Ridge.
