Toronto’s annual tulip giveaway returns with 15,000 free blooms

It’s about to be a colourful, blooming weekend in the city. Toronto Tulip Day is back again this year, honouring the long-rooted history and friendship between Canada and the Netherlands.

The Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Toronto will hand out 15,000 tulips to the public.

Long-lasting friendship

According to Netherlands in Canada on Instagram, the flowers represent the Netherlands’ enduring gratitude to Canada and the strong bond they share today.

The annual event commemorates the anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands during the Second World War.

That victory was made possible through the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of Canadian men and women whose efforts played a pivotal role.

And, in addition to its historical significance, the event also highlights Dutch Heritage Month in Ontario. It’s just another reason for Torontonians to take part in the celebrations this weekend.

Now, as for the giveaway, that will take place on Saturday, May 9, from noon to 3 p.m., or while supplies last. Visitors can make their way to Nathan Phillips Square to pick up their tulips.

Best of all, these blooms are free, so if you want a better chance of getting your hands on some fresh flowers, you may want to get there early.

More blooms in Toronto

That’s not the only place in the city you can get freshly cut flowers.

The Toronto Flower Market kicks off its first floral market experience of the year this weekend.

Just in time for Mother’s Day, Toronto’s annual market of all things green and floral is coming to Queen Street West on Saturday, May 9, too.

Needless to say, it’s going to be a colourful weekend in Toronto.
