From galleries to artifacts, here are 8 museums in Alberta that are FREE to visit and enjoy.

If you’ve never been to the Esker Foundation Modern Art Gallery, you are in for a treat! Check out locally sourced pieces, resident exhibits and connect through a mutual appreciation of the finer things with your +1.

Featuring a large collection of artifacts and archival holdings from the late nineteenth century and the present day, The Loyal Edmonton Regiment Military Museum is ever-expanding and FREE to visit.

Home to the City of Edmonton’s Archives, the Prince of Wales Armouries are also home to military exhibits and lends itself to tradeshows, weddings, family gatherings and corporate retreats.

With a bunch of restored neon signs The Neon Sign Museum might be outdoors, but it’s perfect for a frosty evening stroll. Grab a coffee nearby and take some photos, admire and enjoy.

An artist-run centre for contemporary art, The New Gallery was established in 1975 and features incredible pieces, all of which have something important to say.

From meteorites to fossils, the University of Alberta Museums have a wide variety of artifacts and are said to be a “valuable tool for outreach to the general University community, and the public at large.” What’s more, it’s free to check out!

While it’s definitely the smallest on the list, the Alberta Curbside Museum is definitely worth visiting if you’re in the area. From mermen to sticks with holes, these folks have displayed some unusual collections – but we wouldn’t expect anything less from a museum built into a literal fence.
Where: Railway Avenue at Pinewood Crescent, in Canmore, Alberta
Established in 1988, Harcourt House describes itself as “an open, viewer-friendly forum for the best in Canadian contemporary visual/new media arts, architecture, and design in the context of international art.” Here, you can wander and learn for FREE (though donations are accepted and appreciated).
