This popular Calgary historic site has changed its name & here’s what to know

Feel like you need a change? You’re in good company! Fort Calgary has announced that they’ve changed their name in an effort to better reflect their mission and the history of the land it sits on.

Located where the Bow and Elbow Rivers meet, the site now known as The Confluence: Historic Site and Parkland or I’táámito’táaattsiiyio’pi (harmonious meeting place) is devoted to shining a light on the Indigenous experience and their relationship to the area, as well as that of the North-West Mounted Police after their arrival.

Here, guests can continue to explore 40 acres of space with the help of a passionate guide and are encouraged to attend events, storytimes, workshops, markets, movie nights and more, so you may be asking “Why the rebrand?”

It’s simple!

“Oral histories, written documents and maps show us that this very spot, the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers, has been a place of rest, trade, celebration and conflict for time immemorial,” they explain.

“Under this new name, we are freer to expand the narrative of this place to encompass the many diverse histories of the land. Stories of the North-West Mounted Police and Fort Calgary help to define this place and will always be a part of the narrative here, but there are other important stories to be told, too.”

The Confluence is scheduled to host an open house on Sunday, May 26th, at 10 am from 10 am to 5 pm.
