These companies were just named the best employers in Canada in 2023

While the national unemployment rate has been steadily dropping, according to Statistics Canada, it always helps to know your options. So whether you’re on the active job hunt or not – you might want to slide your resume over to these companies when you see an opening. Forbes just released its annual ranking of Canada’s best employers – and this year’s list is in the hundreds!

The ranking is based on an anonymous survey of over 12,000 Canadians working for companies with a minimum of 500 employees – which led to 2,900 different organizations receiving reviews. Participants were asked about work-life balance, growth opportunities, and how likely they were to recommend their current employer to friends and family.

So in total? The list was narrowed down to the Top 300 employers – primarily in Canada, but some are U.S. and internationally based.

Top sectors

Topping the list is the Canadian education sector, with six universities in the top 25: Sheridan College at the coveted #1 spot, Carleton University at #6, McMaster University at #13, Concordia University coming in 16th, and the University of Victoria rounding it out at #25.

As for other dominating sectors, the list includes a ton of IT and software companies, including big names like Google and Microsoft, and a handful of government services, ranging from the City of Brampton to the Bank of Canada.

It may also come as a surprise that the Canadian Mental Health Association and the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario made the cut, if only due to the immense strain on hospitals and health systems nationwide since the pandemic.

Finally, we come to a couple of unique employers outside of the above categories. The Keg Steakhouse & Bar jumped from #13 on the list last year to #3 this year, and Lululemon Athletica came in at #14.
