Lights, camera, action: 6 shows and movies filming in Alberta this spring

From Indie films and major productions to blockbuster hits and critically acclaimed adaptions like HBO’s ‘The Last Of Us’ – Wild Rose Country is a hot spot for cinema and television, but what (and who) can we expect to see this upcoming season? Keep your peepers wide, because here are just a few TV Shows and movies filming in Alberta this spring.

FARGO

A production all too familiar to Albertans, Fargo season 5 will continue to film in and around Calgary this spring. This upcoming anthology series will star Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Juno Temple (Ted Lasso), Jennifer Jason Leigh (Atypical) and Joe Keery (Stranger Things) and will premiere later this year.

THE ABANDONS

Described as a “Western action drama,” The Abadons, will follow a group of ‘diverse and atypical families’ who are driven out of their homes by a corrupt force of wealth and power” and will be made up of 10 episodes in season 1. As of right now, it’s unclear who will star in the project, but Kurt Sutter (best known for Sons of Anarchy and Mayans M.C.) will act as the show’s producer and showrunner when they get things rolling this June.

THE ORDER

Starring Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts) and Nicholas Hoult (The Great) ‘The Order,’ is a crime thriller based on the crimes committed by a domestic terrorist group called The Silent Brotherhood. Directed by Justin Kurzel (Macbeth) and written by Zach Baylin (King Richard), production is set to take place in Alberta this May.

WIND RIVER: THE NEXT CHAPTER

Produced by Castle Rock Entertainment and directed by Kari Skogland (The Handmaid’s Tale), Wind River: The Next Chapter, will follow a newly minted tracker who is hired to help the FBI solve a series of ritualistic murders and is set to begin filming cross-province in April of 2023. According to IMDB, the movie will star Scott Eastwood, Martin Sensmeier, Chaske Spencer and Jason Clarke.

THE THICKET

A heartwrenching story about a boy who enlists a bounty hunter after his sister is kidnapped by a violent killer, The Thicket stars Sophia Lillis (It), Noomi Rapace (Prometheus), Charlie Plummer (Looking For Alaska) and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones). Expect to see cast and crew in and around Calgary between February 27th and March 31st of this year.

BILLY THE KID 2

Based on the true story of the real-life gunslinger and cowboy, Billy The Kid is back for a second season and will be filmed in Alberta this May. Starring Daniel Webber (The Dirt) Eileen O’Higgins (The Irregulars) Sean Owen Roberts (Brand New Cherry Flavour), and Dakota Daulby (The 100), keep an eye out for action, excitement and drama.
