Here’s where you can explore over 20 shipwrecks in Ontario this summer

There’s no doubt that Ontario is blessed with lush greenery and stunning landscapes but if you’ve done enough land exploration, maybe it’s time to hit the water. You can deep dive and explore over 20 historical shipwrecks at Fathom Five National Marine Park this summer and here’s what to know.

If you’re up for the drive, the trip is about four to five hours north of Toronto, in Tobermory, Ontario. Fathom Five is a short distance away from the small town and offers some of the best freshwater diving experiences in Canada.

Not only will you get the chance to explore submerged geological formations like cliffs and caves but you can also experience a bit of Canadian history. The marine park has 22 historical shipwrecks to discover. Talk about a deep dive into history.

Some of the shipwrecks include the W. L. WETMORE (Steamer), CHINA (Two-masted schooner), AVALON VOYAGEUR II (Motor ship) and TRUELLEN (Yacht).

Five of the dive sites in Big Tub and Little Tub are prohibited. All divers must be within 30 metres of the dive flag though, according to Parks Canada.

Regardless, tour boats do enter the Big Tub shipwreck area so you can still get a glimpse of the past.

Whether you’re an expert diver or a novice snorkeller, there are lots of things to do during your time at the park.

All divers will have to register and purchase a dive pass before diving but it’s not required for snorkeling.

For any divers that are not yet certified, a Dive Master or Scuba Instructor must be with you to supervise. For the full list of rules and requirements, click here.

Fees

Daily passes start at $7.25 for Senior, $8.50 for adults, and free for youth 17 and under. As for family pricing, that’s around $16.75. For the full list of fees, click here.

Devil Island, Cove Island, Flowerpot Island, and Russel Island are all part of the marine park, too. Now that’s what we call a worthy road trip!
