This canyon is home to ancient cliffside pictographs & the largest sand dunes in BC

Ready for a natural wonder that doubles as a historical site? Farwell Canyon in the Central Cariboo-Chilcotin Region is ripe with wildlife viewing opportunities, canyon views, and ancient history. The best way to take it all in? Through a hike on the Farwell Canyon Sand Dune Trail – which takes visitors through the canyon’s desert-dry limestone and sandstone, and the largest sand dunes in BC.

According to Destination BC, the latter marks one of the only natural sand dunes in the country, and features incredible water-carved formations like hoodoos (AKA fairy chimneys). So if you’re keen on seeing some of the most unique rock formations in the country, look no further.

Among the canyon’s standout features are the ancient pictographs hikers can spot on the cliff faces, depicting the stories of the early First Nations that settled there. On the Chilcotin River’s edge are even a pair of abandoned pioneer cabins. Hiking here is pretty much like stepping back into history!
