Bundle up: Bitter cold arctic air is bringing -33 C wind chill to Toronto tonight

January did not come to play in Toronto. After near-record snowfall, followed by more snow and nine straight days of extreme cold weather alerts, we might be getting hit with the most frigid temps of the season tonight.

Environment Canada has issued a warning for Toronto ahead of “very cold wind chills” tonight and into Wednesday morning.

“Bitterly cold arctic air settles over the region once again,” says the advisory. “Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.”

The minimum temperatures expected in the city tonight will range from -21 to -27 C, with wind chill values between -28 C and -33 C, says Environment Canada.

That puts us right on par with Chapleau, Ontario, which is one of the coldest places in the world today at -32 C, feeling like -40 C.

“Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter,” warns the advisory.

“Dress warmly. Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant.”

“If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside,” it says.

According to The Weather Network’s 14-day forecast for Toronto, the warmest day we have to look forward to is Thursday, February 3rd, when a high of 1 C is expected. But, temperatures will drop right back into the negatives in the days to follow.
