This inner-city park is known as Calgary’s ‘Wandering Island’

It’s a place for “slow art,” with an audience of birds, bats, beaver and fish. In inner-city Calgary, this organic green space is a location where space and culture collide.

A true hidden gem, Elbow Island Park is a quick but satisfying loop through a riverbed forest. Located just off of 4th Street and Elbow Drive, the path includes a hop over a gentle stream and public art, all tucked away on a small island near the Elbow River.

Here’s why this secluded gem is known as the “Wandering Island” and where to find it in Calgary.

Access via Fish Ladder

An impressive “Fish Ladder” was designed by local artists Caitlind r.c. Brown and Wayne Garrett. It’s the only way to access this serene island, nestled along the Elbow River.

With the sides of the staircase and ladder mimicking the bones of a fish, it’s a gentle reminder that this island is based upon the flood and natural processes of Elbow Island Park.

A quick loop will take you through a wooded area, and there’s even more public art to find. You can hop across poetic Stepping Stones and bask in Sun Chairs overlooking the riverbend.

The spot can be accessed by stairs off of Mission Bridge, and the paths onsite are unpaved and unmanicured, making this a true natural experience.

The City of Calgary invested $525,000 in this inner-city park experience, so it’s worth finding during your next trip to Mission. Whether you’re looking for a quick escape from city life or are looking to ponder the change of seasons, the Wandering Island will be waiting.
