Edmonton’s standard speed limit is officially getting lowered next year

Well folks, we hope you won’t be in a hurry to get anywhere next summer. On Wednesday night, the Edmonton City Council voted to lower the standard speed limit in the city. By the summer of 2021, the new speed limit will be 40 km/h, instead of 50.

The reduction will affect most roads in communities around the city. Plus, parts of major roads like Whyte Ave, Jasper Ave and Saskatchewan Drive will all see a reduced speed limit. This change also first started rolling back in 2018, but picked up steam over the summer of this year.

In that public consultation, a slim majority of respondents felt that ‘traffic safety is a concern their neighbourhood’. Additionally, Edmonton’s plans to ‘densify’ the city will lead to a higher number of vehicles in certain areas of the city.

So, the council went ahead and passed the new bylaw. It will cost around $1.1M to implement (mostly to cover the cost of new signs), and should be ready to go by next summer.

If you’d like to read the new bylaw in full, you can do so via the City of Edmonton website.
