Good news, transit lovers! Last week, the city administration recommended that the gondola for the Edmonton River Valley continues to move forward. Basically, the project has been deemed viable, and city council will need to take the next decisions. Here’s a quick rundown.
The project is called Praire Sky Gondola. The idea was initially introduced in 2018, but naturally, planning a project of this size has taken some time to get off the ground. Most impressively, the project is not asking for any funding from the city to build, maintain or operate the gondola.

Instead, the next steps involve figuring out lease agreements, writing permits, and other kinds of due diligence before the official design phase can begin. Even still, it’s nice to see that the project is being supported by the city itself.
The gondola project will connect Whyte Avenue to the Downtown area, with 5 stations planned in between. These would be Downtown, Rossdale Power Plant, Ortona Armoury, Steel Park and Whyte Avenue. While there could be transit tie-ins as well, the gondola will primarily serve as an attraction for the region.
