Welcome to the very start of the weekend, Edmonton! We like to treat Friday at least partially like the weekend, if only for our own benefit. Luckily, we’ve got some much warmer weather to look forward to this weekend. And, we’ve definitely earned some fun.

Here are 10 things to do this weekend in Edmonton.

CHECK OUT DATE NIGHT UNDER THE STARS

The U of A Botanic Garden recently unveiled a new series of adult-oriented evenings. Stroll around the gardens, zoom down an ice slide, and enjoy some tasty treats. Now that the weather’s nicer, we think this is a great outdoor option.

When: On throughout the weekend
Where: Parkland County, Alberta
Cost: $20 (extra for add-on experiences)

GO CROSS COUNTRY SKIING

Ready to feel like an early 20th-century explorer? Rent some skis and spend a few hours enjoying Edmonton’s many cross-country trails. Stick inside city limits for free and easy loops, or head to a nearby nordic area, like the Strathcona Wilderness Centre.

When: Throughout the winter
Where: All around Edmonton
Cost: Varies

HIT THE SLOPES

On the other hand, Sunridge, Snow Valley and Rabbit Hill are all looking great right now. If you’re ready to just zoom down a hill and forget about getting back up, then this weekend is going to be a great time to do it. Just head down early to beat the rush.

When: Now open
Where: Around Edmonton
Cost: Varies per hill

GRAB SOME GROCERIES

We love takeout and delivery as much as the next person. But, sometimes, it’s nice to just grab some fresh fruits and veggies, or some local baking, or a nice frozen meal. And, there’s no better place to do that than at Edmonton’s farmers markets!

When: Open throughout the weekend
Where: Various locations

WATCH SOME HOCKEY

The Oilers face off against the Flames for Back to Back Battles of Alberta this weekend. Plus, the Canadian-only division has led to some of the most interesting and high-intensity regular season hockey we’ve seen, and we’re ready for that train to keep rolling.

When: Games Friday, February 20th and Saturday, February 21st

OR A COUPLE IMPROV SHOWS

Edmonton’s Rapid Fire Theatre is hosting an event called Wildfire starting on Friday. It’s basically an improv festival for students, which means you might see the next big Edmonton star before they’re born. After all, more than a few names were made here.

When: Starts Friday, February 19th
Where: Online
Cost: Varies

CHECK OUT ICE IN THE CITY

Ice on Whyte might look a little different this year, but it’s still worth seeing. Plus, the location is undeniably very convenient. We say order takeout from a nearby restaurant, then show up a little early and do a quick tour before grabbing your meal.

When: On throughout the week
Where: Downtown Edmonton

GO ICE CLIMBING

Edmonton’s latest attraction is undeniably unique. The Edmonton Ski Club and Edmonton’s Alpine Club of Canada have made their own ice climbing wall, and everyone is welcome! Already familiar with the sport? The wall is illuminated at night, too.

When: Now open!
Where: 9613 96 Avenue NW
Cost: $9.45 and up

SKATE AROUND EDMONTON

The Victoria Park Skating Oval and IceWay are officially open for the winter! Head down whenever (it’s open from 10 AM-10 PM) and enjoy one of Canada’s most quintessential winter activities. Plus, the IceWay lights up at night!

When: Open daily
Where: 12030 River Valley Rd NW
Cost: Free!

SILVER SKATE FESTIVAL

Speaking of skating, one of Edmonton’s favourite winter festivals is returning with all the events you know and love! Obviously, things will be adhering to social-distance rules and public health mandates, but we’re still pretty excited for this one!

When: Ends Sunday, February 21st, 2021
Where: Hawrelak Park, 9330 Groat Rd Edmonton

And that’s our roundup of some great things to do in Edmonton this weekend! We hope that you enjoy yourselves out there, folks.
