Pay what you can for a special showing of this new Edmonton play

A new musical is coming to Citadel Theatre, which is exactly what we need to breathe some life into our week. As You Like It is a retelling of the classic Shakespeare play with a little bit of Beatles flare. Ok, a lot of flare, especially because it’s set in Vancouver in the 60s.

The show is as psychedelic as you would expect, with the Okanagan filling in for the play’s ‘Forest of Arden’. Floral designs, flared pants and other touches fill the stage without taking away from the play itself. It’s a tough balance to hit, but accomplished well here.

Plus, over half of the original script has been replaced by Beatles songs. If that seems excessive, you should rest assured that the vast majority of them either move the plot forward or help to reveal emotion. Thank goodness the Beatles wrote a lot of love songs.

As a final touch, this Sunday’s performance of As You Like It is pay what you can night. That’s right, Citadel Theatre is reserving a portion of tickets for the show for individuals who might not be able to afford regular ticket prices.

No matter what night you pick, make sure you check out this fantastic production while it’s in town!
