Don Cherry has been fired from Hockey Night in Canada

Don Cherry has officially been removed from his longstanding post on Hockey Night in Canada. The firing comes as a result of Cherry’s controversial ‘you people’ comments on Saturday night’s broadcast.

The 85-year-old Cherry has hosted his “Coach’s Corner” segment for over 30 years and never shied away from political discussions while being a staunch supporter of Canadian troops. His brash demeanour was often the fodder for Monday morning water cooler talk around the country, leading him to becoming one of the most recognizable media figures in Canada.

That being said, the majority of his fanship knew him for his hockey knowledge and impact on the game and its viewers.

Sportsnet, who owns the broadcasting rights to Hockey Night in Canada, released the following statement in a tweet regarding Cherry’s dismissal:

Online, reactions vary from unwavering support for Don Cherry to celebratory statements of “good riddance”. There has been no official statement yet from Cherry’s camp, but we’re sure this story will be grabbing plenty of national headlines over the next few weeks.
