5 reasons to make this lady-led mobster flick the next movie you see
What do you get when you cross a rough group of Irish gangsters from NYC with a trio of Hell’s Kitchen housewives whose mobster hubbies are all in prison? Well, in this specific case, you get an unlikely cast of FEMALE Hollywood heavyweights putting together one hell of a movie. So, listen up, Edmonton! Here are five reasons why you should check out The Kitchen ASAP.
1. It’s an ORIGINAL summer blockbuster
To be fair, the screenplay is adapted from a graphic novel which means it’s not technically 100% original. That being said, The Kitchen isn’t a part of a mega-franchise, it isn’t another summer superhero flick, and it doesn’t feature an action star CGI’d to oblivion so he or she looks 20 years younger.
Instead, it’s a crime thriller about the mob with women at the forefront. That’s something we don’t think we’ve ever seen before and definitely something we’re excited about.
2. The Stellar Cast
Hot Take: Melissa McCarthy is the funniest actress in the game today. Even hotter take: her dramatic acting chops might be on par with her comedy. Don’t believe us? That’s fine, you’ll just have to hit up The Kitchen and see if our position holds up! Also, don’t forget for a second that this film also has the very talented Tiffany Haddish who broke out big time in 2017’s Girls Trip. This time around she is trading in the laughs to flex some serious dramatic acting muscle.
Finally, we come to Elisabeth Moss. She’s worth seeing in anything and everything she touches, so that’s all you should need to know.
3. It’s Gonna Be Gritty
Director Andrea Berloff was one of the screenwriters of the 2015 N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. That should be enough evidence to prove that this lady-led mobster flick is going to be gritty, realistic, and pull no punches. Just the way we like it.
4. Canadian Connection
Elisabeth Moss plays the lead in The Handmaid’s Tale. That show is filmed in and around Toronto. The Handmaid’s Tale was also written by Canadian literary legend Margaret Atwood.
5. Women Kicking Ass
Last but not least, the main reason why most people should and will see this film as soon as possible is that these ladies kick ass and take no prisoners. With the mobster genre being defined by so many men, it’ll be nice to get a fresh perspective on a classic scenario.
Well, there you go! Those are our 5 reasons why The Kitchen is going to be one of the must-see films of the year. The movie will be opening in theatres on August 9th, so mark it off on your calendar!
