Canadian business hopefuls, listen up. The beloved show, Dragons’ Den is holding auditions for season 20 in Toronto on Feb. 8, so if you have an idea that deserves exposure, this is your chance.
The TV show has been on air for nearly a decade, giving entrepreneurs the chance to pitch their business to a panel of multi-millionaires, who decide if they’re going to invest their time, expertise and money on the idea.
Contestants get three minutes to present their venture, so they gotta make it good. Think you have what it takes?
“Welcome to the first step in your journey towards braving the Den,” says CBC.
Auditions will take place at the CBC Toronto Atrium on Feb. 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. How does one prepare for such a massive opportunity? Luckily, the TV network shares some helpful tips.
Firstly, suggests CBC, ask yourself the right questions such as: What’s your competitive edge? Why is this the next great deal, and why are you the entrepreneur to invest in?
Secondly, make sure there is a human connection to your pitch. Whether that’s how you got started or who you are as a person, it’s a TV show so it’s important to make a connection with the dragons, and the audience.
This is a big one. Be sure to bring everything you will need to audition. “We encourage you to bring any equipment you need to auditions, including extension cords, laptops, stereos, etc. Producers will not be able to connect any hardware or software to their own electronics,” shares CBC.
Applicants are also asked to fill out an application before they arrive at the audition. The application goes over the basics such as who you are, where you’re from and what your business idea is.
CBC provides a flow of what the audition will look like, starting with the pitch. The show typically follows a script when it comes to the audition, which is along the lines of, “Hello Dragons/producers, my name is Jane, I’m from Toronto Ontario, and I’m here seeking $100,000 for 20% of my business, Jane’s Book Store.”
From there, you will demonstrate your product or service, followed by a question and answer session with the dragons.
This season will feature Canadian actor Simu Liu as one of the dragons, along with Brian Scudamore, Michele Romanow, Arlene Dickinson, Wes Hall and Manjit Minhas.
Good luck, Toronto!
When: Feb. 8, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
