You hear that? It’s the sound of my will to live returning. Yep, It’s almost time to spring into Daylight Saving Time in Ontario, meaning the sun is going to go down later and the days of more sunlight are nearly here. We’re just two weeks away, and here’s what to know!
According to Time and Date, the practice of ‘springing forward’ and ‘falling back’ in Canada dates back to 1908, when it was first used right here in Ontario in Thunder Bay!
“Moving the clocks forward one hour in the spring grants us more daylight during summer evenings while moving clocks back one hour in the fall grants us more daylight during winter mornings,” says the Old Farmer’s Almanac.
Since 1987, the official time zones and DST have been regulated by the provincial, territorial, and municipal governments, with the exception of Yukon, the majority of Saskatchewan, and some locations in Quebec, northwest Ontario, and northeast B.C.
This year in Ontario daylight saving time will begin at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 9, 2025. This means that the clock will move forward one hour to 3 a.m., so while you may be losing an hour of sleep, it’ll all be worth it for a little more sunshine.
“Sunrise and sunset will be about 1 hour later on March 9, 2025 than the day before. There will be more light in the evening and less light in the morning,” shares Time and Date.
You can enjoy the later sunsets from March 9 until Nov. 2, 2025, when the clocks will turn backward an hour from 2 a.m. to 1 a.m. While that extra hour of sleep that morning sounds great, it’s back to less sun and more of being a hermit at home (I hope that’s not just me….).
Soak it in Ontario and don’t forget to set your clocks!
When: March 9, 2025, at 2:00 AM (becomes 3:00 AM)
