Seattle’s cost of living rose the fastest in the US over the past decade

We all know that Seattle is expensive but just how expensive is it really? It turns out Washington as a whole is extremely expensive. In fact, Washington and our southern neighbor Oregon have experienced the largest price increases over the past decade.

A rising cost of living is like a slow boil and many people have come to realize just how high Washinton’s cost of living has become during the pandemic. The reason for that is because of supply challenges due to the COVID-19, the states have experienced rapidly rising inflation. But even before the pandemic, costs have been rising, and just how much may shock you.

Filterbuy broke down data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis Regional Price Parities Dataset (RPP) and compared the calculated percentage to the U.S. Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index to determine each cities ranking. The data was taken between 2010 and 2020.

When it comes to Seattle, Tacoma, and Bellevue the overall cost of living compared to the average rose 12% over the past decade. What’s more, the percentage change in the cost of living between 2010 and 2020 was 23.2%. Other notable increases were the cost of goods which rose 11.4% and the cost of housing which rose a whopping 52.3% as compared to the average.

For comparison, Portland and Hillsboro Oregon experienced an overall cost of living increase of 5.7% between 2010 and 2020.
