Construction on Calgary’s $500M BMO Expansion is now officially underway

It’s been a long road, but we made it, YYC! After years of chatter, budget meetings and an extensive search for a designer, construction for Calgary’s $500 Million BMO Expansion is finally underway, ushering in a new chapter for the Stampede grounds and the Skyline as we know it.

“Today, right on schedule, crews are breaking ground on the new facility on Stampede Park,” CMLC and The Calgary Stampede said in a joint press release.

With 24 months of pre-construction behind them and all hands on deck, all that’s left is to start building the 560,000 square feet of multi-use expansion space.

From major conventions to concerts, this incredible new venue will be able to host far more events than that of the original building, bringing people far and wide to attend conferences, shows, and more.

“I’m so pleased to see the BMO Centre expansion progress,” said Mayor Naheed Nenshi. “We are solidifying our role as the ultimate host city while creating new jobs and economic activity in the creation of a vibrant Culture and Entertainment District in Victoria Park.”

According to the release, this particular project is excepted to take several years, with a projected grand opening at some point in 2024.

When it completed, Calgary’s BMO Centre will actually be THE largest convention facility in western Canada, which can mean big things for our hospitality and tourism industries, so prepare yourselves! Things are about to get pretty wild (west) at Calgary’s iconic grounds.
