Canada’s just announced that it will be lifting the ban on cruise ships

Woah, here’s some big news we didn’t expect to get today. On Thursday, July 15th, the Canadian federal government officially announced the return of cruise ships. But, they won’t be returning anytime this summer, and it will be a while before things are fully ‘back to normal’.

The news comes from Canada’s Minister of Transport, the Honourable Omar Alghabra. Basically, he has confirmed that as long as cruise ship operators follow the rules, the prohibition of them in Canada will end on November 1st of this year. Cruise ships have been banned in Canada for over a year now, since March 19th of 2020 (woah).

The good news is that this actually could move up the timeline set earlier this year. Back in February, the Canadian government announced that cruise ships could not return until at least February of 2022. However, a more positive outlook thanks to widespread vaccinations and public health restrictions has pushed that forward.

Surprisingly, Canada has yet to update the return of leisure travel into the country. But, with this news, we’d be flabbergasted if that doesn’t get released in the coming weeks as well.

So, Canada is gearing up to welcome back cruise ships, and we’re sure they’re happy to return. We’ll keep our eyes open for any new routes coming to Canada this winter!
