We have a reputation here in the north for our generosity and kind nature, along with some other things (beavers? Maple syrup?). We’d say life here is about as comfy as it gets in a lot of ways. According to a global survey, Canada was perceived to be one of the safest countries in the world.
This was decided by US News. Despite often being stereotyped as having a squeaky clean character, Canada got beat out by Switzerland for the top spot, but we’ll take it. The results came after more than 20,000 people worldwide assessed the perceptions of 73 countries on 65 different metrics.

“Safety is one of the top priorities for nations worldwide, be it in better protecting its citizens on the streets, guarding them against wrongdoing, or even safeguarding them against online crime,” said US News, who posted the report.
To the surprise of almost no one, the majority of the list was dominated by mostly European and Scandinavian countries. Also us, of course.
Here were the top 10 perceived safest countries in the world:
1. Switzerland
2. Canada
3. Norway
4. Denmark
5. Australia
6. New Zealand
7. Sweden
8. Finland
9. Austria
10. Netherlands
It looks like we’re in good company! Also worth noting, the USA ranked in at 32nd on the list.
