Calgary’s newest public ‘park’ is built on a rooftop parkade overlooking the city

When we say ‘park’, you probably picture trees, grass, slides, and a swing set, right? Right. Honestly, we did too – until today! Surprise, surprise! Beltline’s newest communal area is actually 6-storeys from the ground and features hardly any greenery at all. High Park YYC, located on the rooftop of the 10th Avenue parkade, is now open and despite its unconventional concept, is the perfect place to enjoy a fall picnic!

Planning for the park actually started in 2019 but has since changed slightly in order to keep Calgarians socially distanced in the midst of the pandemic, but you’d never know it!

This 2-acre area is laid out perfectly and is bright, full of chairs, tables, and fun colours. According to the Calgary Parking Authority, it will mostly be used for outdoor concerts as well as public events like yoga classes and community gatherings. Who knew parking lots were so versatile?

High Park will be open every day from 7 am until 11 pm, so check it out! We haven’t been yet, but we can’t wait to grab a bite overlooking the city. Enjoy, folks!
