Calgary’s iconic Plaza Theatre has been saved & will reopen when given the green light

Film-lovers, rejoice! Today should be celebrated with a bowl of layered popcorn and a marathon of your favourite oldies because Calgary’s historic Plaza Theatre has a new tenant!

As we’re sure many of you remember, last year the owner of the legendary Kensington spot announced his retirement, pleading for someone to take over the lease in hopes of keeping the theatre open as it was intended.

The beloved landmark, which was originally built in the 1920s, is best known for showing indie flicks, underrated classics, and of course, for its unreal Rocky Horror Picture Show Party at Halloween.

It’s been the site of some incredible events, local premiers and was a favourite among movie buffs, but unfortunately, no thanks to COVID, the owner was practically forced to give the place up. According to CTV, minor renovations are currently happening and the theatre hopes to open when Calgary’s third step of the reopening plan occurs.

To be honest, like so many of you, we were pretty worried about what might happen to the iconic building, but no longer! The Plaza is back, baby, and after a few minor renovations, will open once again to the public.

Here’s to another 40 years and a thousand more showings!
