Alright, friends. Alberta has reinstated some of their tighter COVID measures, but we’re here to remind you that not all fun is lost! We’ve gotten through this once and we’ll get through it again. This month, there are still a ton of safe outdoor experiences and virtual markets and games to enjoy, so don’t fret – you can still have a holly jolly season without the big events and bustling crowds of people – Just check out our list of 20 things to do at home and around Calgary this December!

WANDER AIRDRIE’S FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS

For the 25th year in a row, Western Canada’s largest outdoor walk-through display will light up the chilliest nights of the year. Drink hot chocolate, take a lap around the ice rink, take photos, and cozy up next to their fire all December long during Airdrie’s Festival of Lights! You won’t want to miss it!

GRAB A DRINK AT THE MIRACLE ON 1ST STREET POP-UP BAR

Let’s get elfin festive! The magical pop-up bar, Miracle on 1st Street Calgary will be back for 2020 and no good deed is guaranteed to land you a spot on Santa’s nice list like buying your closest friends a round of spiked eggnog.

EXPLORE THE VIRTUAL SPRUCE MEADOWS CHRISTMAS MARKET

CATCH A CHRISTMAS CAROL ONLINE FROM THE ROSEBUD THEATRE

Typically, we’d say take a scenic drive to the small town of Rosebud, Alberta this December and join Scrooge on a soul-searching journey through his humble past, troubled present, and uncertain future. But for now, watching online is the safest bet. Good thing you can do that too!

BROWSE THE SASKATOON FARM CHRISTMAS MARKET

From goods made by Alberta artists and bakers to pro crafters, the 2020 Saskatoon Farm Holiday Market will fill your bags and your hearts with some serious Christmas spirit. Meet and greet special guests, including Santa Claus and the Grinch, and indulge in fresh mini donuts, kettle corn, soft pretzels, and cinnamon buns (just to name a few).

HIT MARKET NIGHTS AT HERITAGE PARK 

It’s market season! Every Thursday and Friday until December 18th, explore quaint shops and artisan booths, or go for a drink on Selkirk’s Winter Patio. Once you’ve shopped and are ready to drop, relax by the fire and make a s’more or have your pet’s picture taken with Santa!

Stay safe, stay dazzled! Like many other events this year, Calgary’s Lions’ Park has had to adjust the way that they do things – but it’s nothing that you’re not already used to! Instead of taking to 14th street on foot, get your holiday spirit on from behind the wheel, and drive through their 500,000-bulb display.

STROLL THE LEGACY CHRISTMAS LIGHTS DISPLAY

The more magic, the better! In celebration of Calgary’s resilience and the end to a chaotic year, Calgary’s Legacy has prepared a beautiful display of Christmas cheer and community! Every night until January 10th, the south YYC neighbourhood will light up with millions of lights, trees, and holiday spirit.

GET DAZZLED AT SPARKLE SPARKLE

We’re not ready for this one, Calgary. This year, enjoy a scientifically charged evening of lights, cosmos, and tasty treats. Enter the Telus Spark Science Centre and journey down their magically lit up path to one of Canada’s largest dome theatres (which will be decked out to look like a 36-foot tall ice cave). Once there, warm up around the “bonfire” and look up at shooting stars and constellations while you sip hot cocoa and make memories.

LIVE STREAM STORYBOOK THEATRE’S ANNIE

Luckily for our sanity, throughout quarantimes, we’ve seen quarantine concerts and virtual table readings – now, sing along to Storybook Theatre’s Annie and support local artists! You can bet your bottom dollar that we’ll be checking it out.

It really is all hands on deck for this year’s celebration of all things merry and bright.
