The Calgary Stampede is most definitely Alberta’s biggest event, so when officials first toyed with the idea of assigning a provincial sport back in 2008, it was really no surprise that they chose the rodeo.

Now, years later, due to the efforts of MLA Muhammad Yaseen, we’re one step closer to securing the century-old tradition as our own.

“Rodeo is an important thread in the rich cultural fabric of our province,” Yaseen told a legislative committee earlier this March.

According to The National Post, a private bill declaring the sport Alberta’s official game was actually passed unanimously by officials this week. This means that whether you love the idea or hate the thought of it, it will be placed in front of the legislature for another round of debates and could be realized within the next few years.

So there you have it. What do you guys think about this, folks? Do you think we even need a provincial sport, if so what would you have chosen for Alberta? Let us know!
