They said it couldn’t be done, but we may have found a ‘gallery’ that rivals the Gopher Hole as Alberta’s more superior display of oddities. Located about an hour outside of Calgary, The Museum of Fear and Wonder has found a way to put the ‘Ah!’ in Art.
From busted wax figures, clown dolls, teeth, and carnival prize rejects, some may believe that the museum exists only to make its guests uncomfortable, and in a way, they’re actually kind of right.
The collection of cursed looking objects is a collaborative project by curators Brendan Griebel and Jude Griebel. Comprised of what they describe as ’emotionally complicated artifacts’ the exhibit speaks directly to the complexities and harsh realities of the human experience.
‘Being’ is dirty work. It can be ugly, confusing, and terrifying, but, like their collection, there’s a beauty in that.

Without hardly any explanation at all, this place kind of forces its visitors to create a story for each object. Without touching or playing with anything, it provides an interactive experience. Everyone is able to take something different from the museum, which means it could be sick to one and serene to another.
As we said, the Museum of Fear and Wonder is private, so in order to see this place, you do have to make an inquiry. It’s only open in the summer months between June 1st and August 30th and unannounced guests will be denied entry. Luckily-ish, for all of you planners out there, you have a lot of time to get your ducks in a row. Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus outbreak, the museum will be closed for the rest of the 2020 season – so you won’t be able to check it out for quiiteee a few more months.
