‘Hell or High Water’ was what The Calgary Stampede was known for following the 2013 floods, but there was nothing that could have prevented the 2020 event from being cancelled. Now, with Calgary (and much of Canada) looking at a very different winter ahead, news of the Calgary Stampede returning in 2021 couldn’t be better timing.
And, along with announcing the 2021 return, the Stampede released its new poster, created by 22-year-old Lexi Hilderman. It symbolizes the ‘passing of the storm and recognizes resiliency and optimism’. Even cooler, the poster was inspired by an image of Katari Righthand of the Siksika First Nation.

In a news release put out on the Calgary Stampede website on Tuesday, Steve McDonough, First Vice-Chairman of the Calgary Stampede Board of Directors, said this: “We’re very excited to take this first step in sharing the poster. While we don’t have all the details about Stampede 2021 at this time, what we can tell you is that we are here for our community when they are ready to ride again. And when we can once again gather together to celebrate, it will be that much more meaningful.”
Well dang, our rootin’ tootin’ cowboy selves might just shed a damn tear. It’s been a long year, folks. So seeing some light at the end of the tunnel is pretty dang exciting.
Stampede 2021 may still look a little different when it arrives but through Hell or High Water, it’ll be back!
