Old video shows a forgotten underground train station in downtown Calgary (VIDEO)
We have to give a shout to the Reddit user ThatGuyisHere1 for uncovering this gem. Turns out, there’s a little-known fact about Calgary. For a while, we were planning to build massive underground stations for the C-Train. In fact, one was actually built under Calgary’s City Hall.
A Global News segment, circa the late 2000s, shows then-mayor Dave Bronconnier walking through the project. And we have to admit, the scope of the thing was pretty stunning…
At the time, Calgary’s economy was booming. And, that also meant a rapidly growing ridership on public transit. In light of this, Calgary’s plan was to essentially split the different C-Train lines between above and underground. A lot can change in 12 years, though.
The project was put on the backburner in the early 2010s. Then, the 2013 flood meant even fewer funds for such large projects. After over a decade, the tunnel still sits under City Hall station, unused.
Will it eventually make its return? We’re going to hazard a yes, although we have no idea how long it will take.
Enjoy the weekend, folks!
