After weeks of uncertainty, Premier Jason Kenney held a conference this afternoon to confirm what many had already speculated. Like several other provinces around the country, Alberta will, once again, put in place several familiar COVID restrictions, closing everything from gyms and restaurants to bars and libraries.

As we’re sure you remember, in early March Kenney announced that instead of adjusting mandates based simply on case numbers, Alberta would begin to focus more on how many people have been admitted into the hospitals.

This was part of a step-by-step plan, which was re-evaluated every two weeks following the ease of restrictions in non-essential areas like bars, restaurants, hotels and gyms.

Though we were doing pretty well after initially completing phase one, step two saw COVID cases on the rise, which brings us to today’s announcement.

Effective Friday, April 9th at noon, all eateries will only be able to offer take-out and curbside pickup, as well as delivery and patio service – but may not let people into their establishments.

In addition to this, mandatory provincewide measures will be kicking in Wednesday, April 7th at midnight. All gyms and studios that have recently been open as part of step 2 must immediately close their doors to the general public. However, they may still offer 1-on-1 training booked as appointments. Libraries will officially be closed and lastly, retail capacities will return to a limit of 15%.

Now, we know that these ever-changing COVID restrictions suck, Alberta. Believe us when we say that we’re with you – but it’s for the best. Please continue to be kind to one another, support local, be patient, and above all, be understanding. We will get through this.
