It’s “bundle up or lose a limb” season! Maybe your winter coat from last year doesn’t fit and the leather jacket and hoodie combo aren’t cutting it anymore. It could even be that you’re worrying about Christmas gifts two months early like a punctual-shopping nutjob. Whatever the case, some of you are looking for a place to do some shopping – and chances are you’re willing to go anywhere but the mall. We don’t blame you! Here are a few out-of-traffic places to snag some winter wear, fun holiday decor or gifts in Calgary this season.
Have you ever noticed that when you go shopping at one of those stores you could find anywhere, they’re still pushing the lighter fall stuff when its been -20 for a month? Because Purr is local to Calgary, you’ll get sweaters in sweater weather, and tanks in summer. They chose what they stock their shelves with, it’s not done by some person at a headquarters on the other side of the country. Purr has the window advantage! The livery in Inglewood carries a solid mix of different brands, weather-appropriate apparel, and accessories for everyone. You’ll find winter jacket gods like Patagonia, Matt, and Nat, and Levis, and smaller but equally as great Canadian gems like and Smash + Tess. The owners of the livery also actually the owners of Camp Brand Goods and Coutukitsch, so you bet you’ll find a ton of their stuff too. It’s definitely worth checking out!

Liz and Lottie is a locally owned one-stop-shop boutique in the East Village. If you’re looking for something to make the house a little cozier during the winter months or if you’re trying to find a sentimental gift this place is your go-to. They also have sweaters, scarves and accessories. Imagine the homeware section in Chapters, but bigger, better and less run-of-the-mill.

Stuff is “Calgary’s only men’s lifestyle store for Men.” All of their apparel and accessories are fashion-forward and modern. Chances are if you can’t find something for a certain “dude’s dude”, or yourself anywhere else, you’ll definitely have luck here. Honestly, you should probably just start your search at Stuff to avoid any shopping misery.

Atmosphere is their name, heavy insulation is their game. Plan on spending a lot of time outside this winter? Like more than one sane person should? You’re going to need to stay warm. Really warm. This store is for all you hikers and outdoors(wo)men who are crazy enough to brave that -30 degree windchill.

Everyone at this point has probably heard of Nordstroms, right? High class, high fashion? Nordstrom Rack is its little sister, who costs a quarter of the price. Who says you can’t be warm, AND chic?

MEC is another shop perfect for mountain lovers and hiking fanatics. Like Atmosphere, they carry a ton of higher-end brands that are masters in their craft. Not only do they have day-to-day wear, but they also have specialty gear as well.

The ski and snowboard season is here! The Ski Cellar not only has bindings, snowboards, and poles, they’ve got jackets and everything else to protect you from harsh winds and blistering cold.
