Olympic Plaza

things to do in calgary this december

No surprise, Olympic Plaza was the first outdoor rink to open this winter. This Calgary rink is magical, and that has a lot to do with the love that the city has put into making it an experience. O.P. is a YYC favourite, and it has everything to do with the surrounding Christmas lights and the “city-alive” downtown atmosphere. This one also gets bonus points for the skate rental hut on site.

Where: Olympic Plaza, 228 8 Ave SE
Time: 6 AM – 11 PM
Cost: Free

Big Marlborough Park

Big Marlborougough Park features walking paths, two massive parking lots, a toboggan hill for the kidlets (and us, tbh), bleachers and a fireplace to warm your buns. Unfortunately, skate rentals aren’t available here, but it’s centrally located and ice is maintained by the city, which makes up for it.

Where: 6033 Madigan Dr NE
Time: 5 AM – 11 PM

Thompson Family Park

This downtown picnic area makes the perfect family skating rink. It’s a smaller space which means it’s easy to keep an eye on the little ones as they kamikaze their way across the ice. It’s also a great date spot, only minutes from 17th Avenue restaurants! There aren’t rentals at this spot, but it’s quiet, quaint and comfortable.

Time: 5 AM – 11 PM

Prairie Winds Park – South Rink

10 best places to skate in calgary

Unfortunately this year, only half of the rink at Prairie Winds Park is open to the public for pleasure skating, so you’ll have to leave the hockey sticks at home. It’s still a great rink for gliding, just remember to bring your own skates, because they don’t have rentals at this one.

Rosedale Community Rink

10 best places to skate in calgary

This little community rink is all about having fun, at any time of the day. That is, if falling on your tailbone repeatedly is fun. There aren’t really hour restrictions on this one, which is why we think it’s so great. Shoot your shot at a 2 AM skate if you wish! The floodlights at this rink automatically turn off at 10:30 PM, but there is a switch that you’ll be able to control just outside of the ODR. Just remember to turn it off when you leave!
