The end is near… for your overpriced coffee habit, anyways. Within the next week or so, Starbucks will be closing four locations across Calgary. Four!? How will we survive?
The Bow, Panorama Hills (wow, that community just can’t catch a break,) The Nexen Building and Kensington are all permanently emptying their coffee filters. So sad. These closures aren’t the first in the last few months either. Calgary has seen several closures around the city over the last month, but according to Starbucks, this is “all part of doing business.”
“Every year we open many new stores, we close some and renovate/relocate a few others,” the company said in a statement. “We consider many factors when we make these decisions.” What about our caffeine levels? Did you consider those??
Only one new store has opened in Calgary in the last six months, but there are plans to open three more and renovate eight in the next year or so.

What about the people?! The employees and the college students living from coffee to coffee? Well, apparently Starbucks actually took pretty good care of most of them. Employees have been offered positions at other locations and communities impacted by closures were warned ahead of time.
Last year, the company had announced that they were closing over 150 stores across the United States, due to “underperformance” but Starbucks says that these instances are unrelated.
