Celebrate the year of the rat during the Lunar Festival this weekend
Time to paint the town red! It’s almost the Lunar New Year! This weekend, celebrate one of the city’s most vibrant holidays at the Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre.
The Lunar New Year is celebrated throughout several cultures, each with traditions that differ slightly. But for all, 2020 marks the year of the rat, the Chinese zodiac animal believed to belong to clever, often very successful people. Congrats to anyone who’s a rat, damn.
This festival will run for two whole weekends and feature incredible performances by traditional dancers and singers, speakers, and martial arts professionals. It’s a whole lot of impressive!
Check out the marketplace and food stalls with incredible authentic dishes, attend a calligraphy exhibition, watch an amazing firecracker show, or ogle a breathtaking lantern display.
This year’s celebration will kick off Saturday, January 18th with a Stampede-style breakfast, and carry into the 26th. The party won’t stop until next weekend, but the main events will be held between 10 AM – 6 PM on the 18th-19th and then again from the 24th-26th.
There’s really nothing like the Lunar New Year, guys. You won’t want to miss it! Happy new year!
