With some seriously warm days ahead, it’s the perfect time to find a few spots where you can cool off without hiding inside all day. Luckily, there are plenty of places around the city to beat the heat, whether you’re looking to go for a swim, spend the afternoon outside or just find a refreshing way to enjoy the summer weather.
So, let’s get into some of the best spots around Calgary to escape the heat this summer.
Located inside Fish Creek Provincial Park, Sikome Lake is one of Calgary’s most popular summer spots when you’re looking to spend a day by the water. The man-made lake features a sandy beach, designated swimming areas, picnic spaces, and plenty of space to relax. The lake also has amenities like washrooms, change rooms, and concessions, so you can make a whole afternoon out of your visit.

If deeper water isn’t really your thing, head over to Riley Park for a more relaxed way to cool off this summer. Located in northwest Calgary, the park’s large wading pool is filled with shallow water, making it a great spot for families with younger children or anyone who wants to enjoy the water without having to worry about swimming too much.

A classic pool day is sometimes all you need when the hot weather starts to roll in, and Stanley Park Outdoor Pool is a great place to make that happen. The southwest Calgary pool has everything you need for a classic afternoon by the water, including a large swimming area, a shallow section for younger swimmers, and a waterslide.

For a more natural way to cool off, Sandy Beach Park is another local favourite when summer temperatures start to climb. The 33-hectare park is situated along the Elbow River and features a large sandy shoreline, shallow wading areas and plenty of places to lounge by the water. On warm summer days, you’ll also find lots of people bringing their furry friends along to cool off.

Bowness Park is a great option if you want to cool off without having to go for a swim. You can rent a paddle boat and cruise around the lagoon, hop on the park’s miniature train, wander along the pathways, or find a shady spot for a picnic. It’s a nice change of pace if you’re looking to spend the day outside without being packed into a busy pool.
