Calgary will soon be home to Canada’s largest fireplace & here’s where it’s being built

The $500 million BMO Centre expansion in Calgary is well underway and, as if we needed one more reason to anticipate its completion, it was recently announced that the building will be home to a massive installation – the largest of its kind in all of Canada.

Designed by an award-winning team of architects from Stantec, Populous and S2 Architecture, the new and improved BMO will offer an astonishing 1 million square feet of space and will likely transform the way people gather together for events, conferences and meetings in Calgary.

On track to open its doors in June of 2024, this new build is said to “showcase both the bright future of the Stampede as well as the welcoming western hospitality that sets the Stampede apart from other convention venues.”

One way that they plan to do this? Well, by keeping visitors warm, of course!

According to the CMLC, the expansion will also include Canada’s largest fireplace – a GIANT structure measuring 31 feet long, 7 feet deep and 70 feet tall.

“It is a nod to western heritage and the feeling of gathering around the campfire for warmth and the exchange of ideas,” The Calgary Stampede added on Twitter.

As you can see above, this thing will be impressive – and pretty nifty, especially in the colder months, but we’ll have to wait to see it in all of its glory.

Until then, get ready, Calgary. We knew big things were coming, but we didn’t think they’d be 70 feet tall. We’re sure they’ve got a few more surprises up their sleeves!
