Toronto’s Billy Bishop Airport is adding a vibrant new art installation to the exterior of its passenger terminal this summer, celebrating the city’s rich diversity.
Though a few months are left until it’s revealed, the downtown airport has announced it is “dedicating a space on the exterior of its passenger terminal” for a new mural. This is in collaboration with the StreetARToronto program and Jakarundi Graphics.
“This mural is a unique opportunity to showcase the creativity of our waterfront community while honoring the heritage of the land on which we operate,” says RJ Steenstra, President and CEO, PortsToronto.
“Through this collaboration with the StreetARToronto program and Jakarundi Graphics, our partners Nieuport Aviation are not only adding a visually striking piece of art to the passenger terminal but also creating a connection between the airport and the people who call this area home.”
And as part of this plan, the Waterfront Neighbourhood Centre will host a stencil-making workshop, with Jakarundi Graphics. This will be open to the general public.
The workshop will take place on Feb. 23, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and it will serve as inspiration for the finished mural.
“For Jakarundi Graphics skill-sharing and collaboration are central to their work. They value, as we do, community partnerships as a way of bringing art into everyday life,” states the release. “The workshop will explore imagery from nature and the geography of the Great Lakes while reminding all that Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport sits on Indigenous lands and waters.”
The ideas and images in these workshops will help inform the design of the future mural. It will be located on the exterior wall of the airport, facing Eireann Quay.
The mural is expected to be completed by Jakarundi Graphics this summer 2025. If you’re interested in taking part in the workshop, reservations can be made online. Make sure you secure your spot on the team.
